What's the difference between Kombucha and Water Kefir

I get asked this question often.

Both kombucha and water kefir are fermented probiotic drinks.

Both are fizzy and both taste delicious.

Which should I choose?

It's really down to personal preference.

Taste

Happy Belly Ferments Kombucha has been described as; refreshing, slightly appley, spritzy, low in sugar

Happy Belly Ferments Ginger Beer Flavoured Water Kefir has been described as a little spritzy, like summer with a hint of ginger, lime, elderberry and lemon.

Ingredients

Kombucha is made with black tea and sugar which is fermented out during the fermentation process

Happy Belly Ferments water kefir is made with water and sugar which is fermented out, fresh lemon juice and fresh ginger

Fermentation method

Kombucha is brewed with a SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria) which look a little like a jellyfish. The scoby sits on the top of the brew

Water Kefir is brewed with Water Kefir Grains or Tibicos which look a little like grains of rice. They sit on the bottom of the brew

Sweetness

Water kefir contains slightly more residual sugar than kombucha

Should I choose one over the other?

Personal preference of taste would be the main reason to choose one over the other.

Can I drink both?

Yes.
